Adding 50,200 Users to a DCE Registry:
A Comparison of OSF DCE V1.0.2 and
IBM DCE/6000 V1.2
Mark R. Carter
This study compares two releases of the Distributed Computing Environment (DCE) dur-
ing the addition of 50,200 ?human users? to the cell registry. To conduct the study, we
configured a one-machine cell with DCE core services (RPC facility, initial security serv-
er, primary CDS server, and DTS local server). The study focuses on the secd paging
space, registry file space usage, and rgy_edit response time. Although resource con-
sumption increases linearly with the number of users added to the cell registry,
rgy_edit response time increases markedly during a registry checkpoint operation. The
registry performance statistics included in this study enable the DCE administrator to es-
tablish a resource usage baseline. However, further investigation is required to ascertain
whether security server replication will smooth the rgy_edit response time or exacer-
bate rgy_edit delays.
