WE are glad to find that there is, at the present time, an increased desire on the part of many native tribes to improve their social condition ; and certainly there is a corresponding desire on the part of the New Zea- land Government to meet these wishes by sending material aid, in order that the projects calculated to advance the Maori may be carried. into effect. At the earnest request of -the Lower Waikato Chiefs, the services of two blacksmiths have been se- cured ; one of them is to be located at Raglan, and the other at Taupari, Waikato River. These men under- take to make and repair whatever implements of husbandry the natives may require, the latter paying for them, and they are to be allowed to work for any European. The Go- vernment grant to each of them a " Ko nga pukapuka papai, e penei ana me nga hoa pono; te whakarere i a tatou—te mutu te ako—te whakatina."
