Conclusions and comments

  1. The mean protein requirement with this Philippine diet was 0.70 g/kg/day and the safe level of intake was 1.0 g/kg/day. All children had good nitrogen retentions with intakes of 150 mg nitrogen, or 0.94 9 protein/kg/day. All these values are lower than current FAD/WHO estimates and recommendations.
  2. Nitrogen absorption was low, probably due to indigestible proteins in rice.
  3. When protein intake is too low, dietary energy is not used very efficiently and weight gains are reduced
  4. Light infestations with A. Iumbricoides and T. trichiura did not affect dietary nitrogen utilization.
